In this talk I will explore the work of Studio Upstairs, a therapeutic art studio for adults experiencing enduring mental health difficulties, founded in London, UK. The studio is based in ideas of therapeutic communities and was founded thirty year ago on the radical ethos of RD Laing and the Philadelphia Association. Although times have changed for the studio elements of this ethos remain, in the attempt to deconstruct polarities of ‘mad’ and ‘sane’ and ‘well and unwell’. Service users find meaning in life through art, and our art focused approach also includes exhibitions of artworks, which are organised by service users. In the open studio we are there as art therapists but also as artists as we make our own work alongside the studio community. I will introduce the setting and our work, with examples, and then link this to some recent thinking around the flexibility of an ‘open studio’ approach, drawing on my co-edited book Contemporary Practice in Studio Art Therapy, Routledge.
